ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— What’s going on along the Genesee River?

A viewer named Michael sent News10NBC’s Brennan Somers this message: "There’s a crane, barge, other equipment at the pier on the east side of the river. That pier has been rough for a long time. So what’s happening?"

Michael isn’t wrong.

The east pier at the Port of Rochester has been in bad shape, that’s understandable since it was built more than 100 years ago. Two sections closest to the shore and to Lake Ontario got upgrades in the 1950s and 70s, but the middle section is close to the original construction.

So starting in August, the US Army Corps of Engineers and contractors got to work. They are repairing some 600 feet of the east pier at the harbor.

Everything should wrap up next month.

The USACE is using federal funding already on hand to pay for the project, and the price tag is $3.4 million.

Repairs on another worn-out 400ft stretch of the east pier will happen if they can get more money.
