ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— What's with all that construction? There are long lines of orange cones, traffic cut down to one lane, and crews hard at work on 390 going south of the Thruway.
Drivers who have to deal with this every day have Good Questions and sent them to News10NBC's Brennan Somers: The 390 exit at Avon (exit 10) is closed for the construction project. How long it will be closed?
What is going on with the road construction on I-390 south between Avon and Henrietta? It's a big state project worth about $32 million. The work covers a 10.5 mile stretch of interstate from Route 5 & 20 in Avon running up to the state Thruway.
Why are they doing this? To make your ride smoother and safer.
Workers are going over and covering the old concrete surface that's just simply worn out with asphalt. This isn't a quick fix. When does it all get done? They started repaving 390 northbound and that's just wrapping up. The good news? No closures once construction season ends and we get into winter.
On the other hand, next year will bring more single-lane shutdowns. Crews will move to the other side and tackle 390 southbound.
They are on track to finish those lanes and ramps at the end of the next work season, so we're looking at around Thanksgiving 2022 for everything getting done.
