Good Question: What’s with the barriers downtown?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— Here’s a Good Question about a random sight in downtown Rochester.

You ever drive by the concrete barriers posted near Basin and Aqueduct Streets not far from the Genesee River?

A viewer asked News10NBC’s Brennan Somers- what’s the deal? It’s not on private property, and many people/delivery drivers use Basin and Aqueduct to navigate the four corners.

That’s a good question because, at first glance, it’s hard to tell what purpose the barriers could serve. So, Somers asked city officials about them.

Crews with the Department of Environmental Services say they’ve been there for roughly about a year, and that part of the city has a long history with ties to the old aqueduct system built back in the 1800s. The area is old, it needs repairs and new supports, and city officials tell Somers they don’t want the public driving over it until everything is fixed and safe.

They wanted to take care of the work in 2020, but COVID pushed it all back to this year.
