Good Question: Why did the USPS driver go through my yard?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— A Finger Lakes homeowner sent News10NBC’s Brennan Somers several pictures of tire tracks and deep ruts in the front yard of a house in Penn Yan.

One picture shows the back of a USPS truck starting to drive off after getting caught in the wet ground and spinning out. The homeowner, Karl wanted to know: Can the post office drive in your wet lawn to make a delivery?

Of course, that’s not supposed to happen but why did it anyway?

Karl and his wife say they were expecting a delivery at their home late last month. it wasn’t anything major or heavy, just some small car parts. He says he shouted at the driver who told him he didn’t want to have to get out and carry the package all the way to the porch.

Somers reached out to the USPS. A spokesperson told him "This incident is under investigation and the Postal Service will be following up with the customer."

By the way, the homeowner did also reach out to Yates County deputies, and they told him they didn’t see evidence of an actual crime or anything appropriate to report an accident or property damage. From their experience, they say the USPS is good at resolving these types of issues.

The sheriff told Somers the homeowner could go to court for a small claims case seeking repair costs. We know this is out of the ordinary but situations do come up, whether that’s a problem with a driver, damaged or lost packages.

The easiest way to file a complaint is to call the USPS helpline or send them an email. That’s what this homeowner did.

USPS reps can then get you in contact with your local postal manager.
