Good Question: Will bridge construction close the canal trail?

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WHEC)— It’s one of the main focus points for New York State Department of Transportation projects happening around New York–fixing bridges.

One of the newest projects just getting underway is in Pittsford. Crews are working on the Route 31- State Street Bridge going over the Erie Canal.

The goal is to extend the life of the bridge, built back in 1973, for another 30 years. There’s a lot happening over the next six months including $3.5 million in upgrades.

Cynthia asked News10NBC’s Brennan Somers: Could you find out if they will be closing the bike path which runs underneath the bridge? It’s such a bad thing when they do this. Taking a detour in a car is one thing, but they often thoughtlessly dump bikes onto any route available, forcing us to deal with dangerous traffic, hills, or roads without shoulders.

Somers asked NYSDOT officials about that

Yes, the trail will stay open. It’s actually the detour for pedestrians and cyclists on State Street. You’ll be diverted onto the trail at Schoen Place.
