ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — You may wonder where you can cool off along the shores of Lake Ontario amid the summer heat. A viewer asked News10NBC’s Brennan Somers: Why is Durand Eastman Beach still closed?
It’s a two-part answer involving the lake and the budget.
As we all know, lake levels in recent years have ruined communities along Lake Ontario. The high water also kept Durand from opening to swimmers in 2019. While the problems haven’t been as bad this year, there are no plans to open it in 2020.
A City of Rochester spokesperson said when they were looking at the new budget, not sure exactly what would happen with the lake this year, they shut it down again to save an estimated $132,300.
The city officially details it as "Durand beach funding is eliminated due to budget constraints."
City officials say they are not forgetting about the beach altogether. In fact, there are plans to invest in a new beach house.
In the meantime, the city is focusing on pools and spray parks for families this summer.
Just because Durand is officially closed doesn’t mean you won’t see people out there, or even in the water — there just won’t be any lifeguards on duty.
