PEMBROKE, N.Y. (WHEC) — An 18-year-old is dead after Genesee County Sheriff’s Deputies say he jumped into the water at Indian Falls Thursday afternoon and didn't resurface.

Deputies identified the young man who died as Jacob C. Minnick of Lockport.

It happened at around 3:45 p.m. in the Town of Pembroke.

Deputies say several bystanders jumped into the water after Minnick didn’t resurface in an attempt to find him, but they were unsuccessful.

"I can't think of a more sad instance of young individuals, young adults having a good time," said Genesee County's Director of Emergency Services Tim Yaeger. "This is not the place to have a good time. We've been here before unfortunately and we're hoping we're not here again."

Yaeger said whenever they have to respond to Tonawanda Creek near Indian Falls, it's never a good outcome.

The Water Rescue Team from the City of Batavia Fire Department and the Dive Team from Alden Fire Department recovered Minnick’s body just before 6 p.m.
