ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Five adolescent offenders Monday were transferred to the Monroe County Jail from the Monroe County Children's Detention Center after Saturday's incident that left four deputies injured.

The county had been trying to move eight teens from the center.

Director of Communications and Special Events Steve Barz said all five adolescents who were transferred were involved in the fight and all are 17 years old. Two of them are charged with murder and three are charged with first degree robbery.

Barz said all five of them are being housed in a special section of the jail, away from the general population.

Before Raise the Age went into effect in 2019 as part of criminal justice reform in New York State, teenagers charged with murder would have been in jail. Now, youth offenders can only be sent to jail if the state Office of Children and Family Services consults with the State Commission on Correction and approves the move.
