ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — More help is on the way for lakeshore communities worried about flooding.

FEMA has announced $660 million in grant opportunities for towns and villages around Lake Ontario.

The grants would be used for plans to mitigate flooding in the area, including planning and construction of floodplain restoration projects, and flood-related mitigation of buildings that have a current National Flood Insurance Program policy.

Applicants need a FEMA-approved state, tribal, or local hazard mitigation plan and must be participating in the National Flood Insurance Program.

Municipalities will need to submit applications for the grants once they become available.
