Amazon moving to future warehouse in Gates, possibly Greece too

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Amazon is moving to at least one and maybe two locations in greater Rochester. The property owner, Acquest based in Williamson, is in the process of building two giant warehouses that would start the final leg of the delivery to your front door.

Right now, the location in Gates is a wide-open field outlined in a tarp.

The trees are gone.

And one solitary worker is grinding up one of the parking lots.

This is Rochester tech Park on Manitou Road.

Cosmo Guinta, Gates Town Supervisor: "It's slated for warehouse, distribution center. That's what the plans were brought in front of us by Acquest Development."

Brean: "That sounds like Amazon to me."

Guinta: "I can neither confirm or deny that. But it potentially could be."

A source tells me it is.

And here's what else I learned.

At its October meeting, the Gates Planning Board approved the project for this site and the minutes say there is an "anticipated increase in traffic" because of the "proposed use."

It also says there will be "significant increase in truck traffic."

Brean: "A lot of truck traffic, delivering goods."

Guinta: "Yes, I'd say about 280 trucks."

That's per day.

Three hundred employees per shift.

The owner of the property in gates is Acquest. The owner did not return my call but remember the company name.

It owned the property on Grand Island where Amazon was supposed to build a 4 million square foot warehouse. That project got canceled in August.

And there's more. Just six miles from that property in Gates there is another wide-open space, owned by Acquest. The location is 1200 Lexington Avenue.

And I'm told there will be a news conference Thursday afternoon, explaining what this new project will be.

A source told me the business here will include "a significant number of jobs with benefits."

Wednesday I saw earth moving equipment and a stack of trees cut down.

The project is 281,000 square feet.

The project in gates is 278,500 square feet.

Brean: "What is your hope with a project like this?"

Guinta: "What is my hope?"

Brean: "Yeah."

Guinta: "Again, it's that that property not be vacant anymore. To be honest with you, if it's Amazon or not, we would love to have any tenant there."

Amazon has two facilities in Henrietta.

In an email, Amazon told me, "Amazon is a dynamic business and we are constantly exploring new locations. We weigh a variety of factors when deciding where to develop future sites to best serve customers, however, we have a policy of not commenting on our future roadmap."
