GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — An Amazon warehouse being built on Manitou Road in Gates is on track to be completed in 2022. The project is set to bring in thousands of jobs to the area.

News10NBC was told crews are working hard to make sure construction stays on the fast track and they're putting up more than 50 rods of steel daily.

"I wouldn't be surprised that before winter they'll have the roof on and they'll start working on the interior so they're moving along really fast,” said Gates Town Supervisor Cosmo Giunta.

The almost 278,500 square foot property started in November of 2020 and went from grass to concrete in the last several months. The site is set to offer around 1,000 jobs if not more.

"Not only bringing jobs but also helping with the housing market and local retailers here and the money that will be sent in the local community and the county is huge, it's huge for all of us,” Giunta said.

Giunta added that he knows there are concerns with truck traffic and regular commuters. He says he doesn't foresee it being a big issue because the site has its own exit and entrance along Route 531 to help minimize it

“There have been some questions initially with the tax breaks that they were getting through COMIDA, which is an important topic but it is for a short period of time and we're going to benefit from this in the long run.”

This Amazon facility on Manitou Road will be among the countries largest construction projects and is set to be up and running by the third quarter of 2022.

"The amount of people that it will bring to — hopefully, Gates — or a potential suburb or even the city you build it they will come,” Giunta said.

News10NBC did reach out to Amazon's corporate team asking when they'll start the hiring process and what that might look like. We're still waiting to hear back.
