ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A rally that organizers called an "Anti-4th of July" event was held on Saturday evening in Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
They say that it is impossible to celebrate the holiday given the current injustices in America, and say that instead the focus should be on teaching, solidarity, and fighting for the freedom of all Americans.
"We'll have opportunities for discussion, community engagement. We just want to make space for people to heal, to talk, and learn from each other," says Stanley Martin, an organizer.
One of the speakers was Benny Warr, a man who a jury awarded $1 after he accused Rochester police officers of using excessive force during his arrest.
Some of the goals that organizers have put forward are the release of those arrested for being involved in the violent events that came after the May 30 protests in Downtown Rochester, and the resignation of county District Attorney Sandra Doorley.
