GREECE, N.Y. (WHEC) — Greece Town Councilman Mike Barry (R) announced his candidacy for New York State Senator.
The councilman is running to represent District 56 held a press conference to formally announce his candidacy Friday afternoon.
The District represents Brighton, Clarkson, Gates, Greece, Hamlin, Parma and parts of the City of Rochester.
Senator Joe Robach, who currently has the seat, already announced his plan to retire at the conclusion of his current term.
"I wanted to do more and I never thought Sen. Kobach was going to resign," Barry said. "But when he said he was retiring, I didn't even put a thought to it until I got a phone call from him and he said, 'This is yours, you need to go do that.' With that guy's backing, it's like, 'Okay maybe I can do this.'"
Barry will seek the Republican nomination at the party convention, this weekend.
