BRIGHTON, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Brighton Central School District has pledged to implement an anti-racism curriculum.

A message was sent out to families from Superintendent Kevin McGowan about how the schools are going to address bias and discrimination in the community.

Their action plan includes implementing a K-12 anti-racism curriculum, implicit bias training for staff members and replacing the baron, which officials from the school say has ties to slavery and elitism, as their mascot.

In the message, the superintendent said in part:

"It is not enough to talk about integrity, respect, responsibility, kindness and self-control. We are called to live these values in what we say and how we act."
