CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (WHEC) – Independence day is a major holiday for the fireworks industry. For almost 80 years, Young Explosives in Canandaigua has been lighting up the sky in the Rochester area. The owner says his company started to prep for the holiday last October. We get to see the twinkle of a firework light up the night sky, but what we don’t see is the prep behind the magic.

"We started pulling shows, we call it pulling that’s when we pull the products we need for a show, we start that in March,” Young Explosives Corp. owner, Jim Young told News10NBC.

Young says, They do about 150, if not 200 shows holiday week and into the weekend leading up to the 4th. He says his company had to navigate supply chain issues but, not to worry, they won’t be short on supply or pyrotechnicians heading into Monday.

“We’re importing from overseas, and just like everyone else, supply chain issues shipping containers are three times the price for shipping, we’re in it like everyone else, we have to use fuel to get to places, so we were hit pretty hard,” Young added.

To get ahead for next year, Young says they’ve already made mental notes and some purchases. We have a list of firework shows happening this weekend across Monroe County, you can find it here.
