ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Monroe County Executive Adam Bello announced Monday that Arline Santiago will co-chair the county’s Commission on Race and Structural Equity.

Santiago is a senior vice president and general counsel at ESL Federal Credit Union, and she'll join current co-chairs Dr. Muhammad Shafiq and former mayor William Johnson.

Bello and Mayor Lovely Warren announced the formation of the commission back on June 18. Its goal is to dismantle structural racism across the county.

"But my point should be clear: The record of confronting controversial problems head-on is embedded in this community's DNA, and it will be no different this time," Johnson said. "We are in the midst of a national reckoning about race, and it is very clear that whatever has been done in the past ... it is simply not enough."

The co-chairs' first task is to develop a process for selecting a 21-member panel.
