Shopping small makes a big difference
In consumer news, bigger isn’t always better. Saturday is Small Business Saturday, and this year shopping small is more important than ever.
According to the Society for Human Resource Management, more than 60% of small businesses have seen a precipitous profit plunge. From the hospitality sector to specialty stores, the pandemic has put in peril the health of the small business sector, and that hurts us all.
According to Rochester city leaders, if you spend $100 at a retail chain, $43 stays in our community. But when you spend it at a locally owned small business $68 stays in our community.
So before you head out on Saturday, visit the website, ShoptheRoc.com where you can search for small businesses in Rochester by name or category.
Google urges shoppers to buy at Black-owned businesses
Google and Wyclef Jean partnered on a campaign to reimagine Black Friday. The campaign encourages you to include Black-owned local businesses when you're doing your holiday shopping. Because often Black business owners have less access to capital, those businesses have been most vulnerable during the pandemic.
Forty-one percent of Black-owned businesses were forced to shut their doors for good between February and April. Compare that to 17% of businesses with white owners.
So if you want to support the Black-owned businesses in the Rochester community click on BOBRochester.com you can search for Black-owned businesses by name and by category.
Amazon says thank you to workers on the frontlines
Amazon workers will have a little more money in their pockets this holiday season. There are likely few people busier right now than Amazon's frontline workers.
So the online giant is saying thank you 500 million ways. Each part-time worker will get a one-time bonus of $50. Full-time workers will get $300. That will cost Amazon $500 million. Not to worry. Amazon can afford it. Its third-quarter revenue grew 37% to a whopping $96.1 billion, shattering expectations. And plenty of folks are likely going to help that revenue growth on Cyber Monday.
