Crews respond to ‘suspicious’ fire on Child Street

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— Four people, including two children, are safe after flames tore through their home, in what investigators are calling a "suspicious" fire Thursday morning.

Crews responded to a two-family home on Child Street near Brayer Street just after 3:30 a.m. Firefighters initially came up to the scene after finishing another job.

Crews said the fire was mostly in the back of one of the units, which had nobody living it at the time. The family living in the unit next door did not know the building was on fire, but crews were able to help them get out safely.

Investigators say the fire seems to have been started on the outside but traveled into the house and up into the attic space. The roof was opened for ventilation and it took crews about 30 minutes to put out the flames.

Both apartments suffered fire, smoke, and water damage and are unlivable.

The Red Cross was called to help the family.

The cause is under investigation.
