Rochester In Focus: East High Superintendent prepares students, parents, and teachers to address racism

Dr. Shaun Nelms is the superintendent of East High School, and he also serves as the director of the Center for Urban Education Success at the University of Rochester. The partnership between U of R and East High School began in an effort to improve the educational experience at East and help the school meet state standards. 

With much to consider ahead of next school year, including students' mental and physical health in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and potentially navigating tough conversations about racism, Shaun and his team are putting several initiatives in place to ensure kids are safe and successful in the fall. 

Last week they hosted a forum for East High students, and this Wednesday, June 17 at 5:30pm they will host an online Zoom meeting for parents. Participants will hear a parent-centered perspective on building trust, transparency, and collaboration for a safe return to school beyond COVID-19. Parent Exchange Zoom link:
