ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The New York State Department of Labor announced that the extra $300 in unemployment benefits will begin next week.

About 2 million unemployed New Yorkers already qualify to receive the benefits and about 435,000 must submit an additional certification to requalify. That certification system will launch on Friday.

In order to qualify, your unemployment must be related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The benefits will cover the weeks ending Aug. 2, Aug. 9 and Aug. 16.

The extra money is coming from FEMA's for Lost Wages Assistance program and will last until one of these four things happens:

  1. The federal Disaster Relief Fund balance falls below $25 billion.
  2. The $44 billion set aside for the LWA program is depleted.
  3. Congress enacts a replacement unemployment relief program.
  4. The Dec. 27, 2020, deadline is met.
