ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— New York State has been celebrating a major milestone. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced this week, 70% of adult New Yorkers have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. However, that's not the case in many parts of our region.
According to state numbers, more than 70% of adults in Monroe and Ontario Counties are vaccinated. The rest of our area is lagging behind.
The worst vaccination rates in our region can be found in Steuben, Orleans, Yates, and Livingston counties.
Take a look at this data from the state:
WORST VACCINATION RATES AS OF 6/15/21
FINGER LAKES REGION
These are percentages of people 18 or older who've received at least one COVID shot. Steuben County is just over 51%. Orleans, Yates, Livingston, and Genesee counties aren't far behind. Only about 64% of Wayne County adults are vaccinated.
Monroe County Public Health Commissioner Dr. Mike Mendoza says it's important to remember COVID is still a risk.
"It's not over until we figure out how to get everybody vaccinated and ensure everybody can remain healthy and safe," Dr. Mendoza said.
We should also point out those numbers are for adults. When you factor in kids 12 and up who are eligible to get the shot only about 56% of people in the state have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine.
Here's a breakdown by county from the state:
VACCINATION RATES 12+ AS OF 6/15/21
Many counties aren't even 50% vaccinated. Right now, according to the state numbers, Ontario County is leading the way where nearly 60% of people 12 and up have received at least one shot.
Now let's focus on Monroe County. Take a look at this data from the Finger Lakes Vaccine Hub:
MONROE COUNTY'S LOWEST VACCINATION ZIP CODES AS OF 6/10/21
The 14614 zip code, which includes Main Street in downtown Rochester and the High Falls neighborhood, only has about a quarter of people with one shot. Four other zip codes in Rochester are only around 40% vaccinated.
"I think some missions are accomplished, but there are still many missions that we still have to work on," Dr. Mendoza explained.
