ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The State Department of Environmental Conservation will deliver re-usable bags to food banks across New York including Rochester’s Foodlink.

The statewide plastic bag ban officially went into effect Sunday.

There are some exceptions to the ban. For example, bags used for produce, newspapers and food-to-go orders will not be affected.

Stores could be fined $250 for violating the ban. However, the DEC won't penalize stores until April 1.

Currently, the DEC is fighting a lawsuit in Albany County.

The suit claims the bag ban is unconstitutional.
