GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — Friday, Gates Police are still looking to arrest at least one more person in the attempted carjacking and murder that’s happened two weeks ago.

A 16-year-old was arrested Thursday and charged with murder in the death of Richard Sciascia.

First a recap of what happened:

  • Gates Police say Sciascia was shot in his car on Buell Road during an attempted carjacking
  • We found video of the suspect car speeding away from the scene, then making a u-turn. The time stamp on the video shows it was four minutes before police were called to the scene.
  • That same car was chased and stopped in the city the same night. Police say the driver of the car was 17. He wasn’t charged but handed to probation because of an outstanding warrant. At the time, police called the 17-year-old a person of interest but we do not know if he is still connected to this case.
  • The person arrested Thursday was 16-year-old Edgar Tolentino. The arrest report says he “caused (Sciascia’s) death by shooting him.”

Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean spoke with Emily Austin, Sciascia's stepdaughter.

Brean: "Emily, what is the latest you know about this case? What's happening now?"

Austin: "I just know they have the young gentleman in custody and am waiting on his arraignment come Wednesday."

Austin was Sciascia's stepdaughter for three decades.

Brean: "So you're waiting for information just like everybody else is on the arrest of somebody else."

Austin: "Correct."

Brean: "And that waiting for you and your family, what is like what?"

Austin: "It's been tough. We are relieved, we have some relief that the first one, the main one, has been arrested and in custody."

The 16-year-old suspect is scheduled to be in Family Court next Wednesday.
