ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A viewer named Mark asked News10NBC’s Brennan Somers: “Can you find out when the NYS lottery offices will open? A lot of people have uncashed winning tickets. There is an option to mail your ticket in to cash. I wouldn't trust a big winning ticket in the mail.”

Due to the pandemic, lotto offices and claims centers are still closed with no exact date for reopening, though drawings and games continue.

Bottom line, you will get paid. But “when” depends on you.

There is a mail in option. You need to fill out the form, sign your ticket, take a picture of it then send it off in the mail. It takes about 3-4 weeks to process. Bigger jackpots can take longer.

You can also hold on to your winning tickets for draw games. They are good for a year. Scratch off winners have their own cash deadlines.

The comfort level of mailing it in is something you'll have to deal with.

State lotto officials stress the system works. They've already processed several big winners of at least $1 million in recent months.
