ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — News10NBC’s Brennan Somers received a Good Question this week about the election, which is a little over 50 days from now.
Suzanne wanted to know: I requested online over a month ago for an absentee ballot since I won't be here for Election Day. I have not received anything yet. When are we supposed to receive it?
It's easy to see some confusion in this.
For starters, some states automatically send out absentee ballots to voters every election. New York also sends them out, but it's a two-step process.
You have to apply and mark your reasoning, which could include the COVID-19 pandemic.
That option is covered here:
Unable to appear at the polls due to temporary or permanent illness or disability (temporary illness includes being unable to appear due to risk of contracting or spreading a communicable disease like COVID-19).
Then you send in your application and wait.
State Board of Elections officials say ballots will start going out about a week from now on Sept. 18.
However, some of you may have to wait longer. Monroe County election officials say you won't get ballots in the mail until sometime in October.
So, keep an eye out.
