GREECE, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Director of Security at Greece Central Schools praised security guard Robin Cooper Monday for successfully performing the Heimlich maneuver on a choking student.

Security footage dated Feb. 26, 2021, shows the Athena High School student running over to Cooper, Cooper recognized he was choking and then performed the Heimlich.

Cooper shared her experience with News10NBC Tuesday, saying it all happened so fast.

Cooper said she doesn't feel like a hero, and that she was just doing her job. She said she's been at Athena for five years and has never had an experience like this in her life.

"At first I was startled, and then I was like, 'Oh no he's choking, his face is red,' that training really helped it was on spot, I'm just thankful that I was in there in the right place in the right time to save that child's life," Cooper said.

Cooper says the student was choking on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She said things like this can happen in the blink of an eye.

Her advice for others in similar job positions is to just be prepared.

News10NBC was told the student is OK and healthy.

Steve Chatterton, the director of security, says the student's father consented to him posting the video, but that the student's name will not be shared.
