ALBANY, N.Y. (WHEC) — Gov. Kathy Hochul Tuesday signed the Adult Survivors Act into law.

This bill provides a one-year lookback window for victims of sexual assault who were older than 18 when their alleged abuse took place to sue their abuser civilly, regardless of when it happened.

This law is similar to the Child Victims Act of 2019.

The one-year window takes effect in six months.

"So those who thought they got away with the horrific crimes they committed I just have one message, your time is up," Hochul said. "Your victims will see you in court, and you will be brought to justice."

New York's statute of limitation laws was extended to 20 years in 2019 for adults filing civil lawsuits for sex crimes.
