ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The new law legalizing recreational marijuana also makes some changes to the state's medical marijuana program.

Medical marijuana was approved in New York state seven years ago, but the program has been narrow and very tightly regulated.

The new law broadens it widely.

"This bill will now authorize those who have marijuana for medical purposes to administer it through smoking," Assemblyman Harry Bronson (D, 138) said. "It also expands the type of illnesses that a doctor can prescribe the medical marijuana and it also increases from the current law which is a prescription for 30 days and increases it to a prescription of 60 days."

When it comes to growing your own, medical marijuana patients or their designated caregivers will be allowed to cultivate up to six plants at home, starting six months from now.
