IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WHEC) — Monroe County Sheriff's deputies announced increased patrols Thursday for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

More deputies will be stationed at parks, near boating areas, and on the roads.

Deputies say they encourage people to social distance amid the COVID-19 pandemic. They add that they will not disperse crowds, but will try to educate the public to avoid the spread of the virus and encourage them to wear personal protective equipment like face masks when they cannot social distance.

"Our purpose is not to enforce or strictly adhere... our role is simply advising the public about what is safe and what and the guidelines set forth by our health care providers," Sgt. Dan Kawski said.

Deputies say they will also have an increased presence on the roads to discourage and stop drunk drivers.
