ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — There's been real progress on a Rochester tribute to a civil rights icon.
A huge mural of late Congressman John Lewis is nearly complete.
Ephraim Gebre, along with artist Jared Diaz and others are painting it on a building on State Street in Rochester.
The work is titled the picture is called "I Am Speaking." It's the third in what they're calling the "I Am" series depicting images from Black history.
The artists hope it inspires the community.
"Sometimes people need to see representation of people actualizing their ideas to remember that hmm their navigators too, they're conquerors too, they're homebuilders too," Diaz said. "They're people who can manifest what they need to and we don't have to wait for permission to do it, you know?"
The artists expect to finish the mural Wednesday.
