ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A man is dead after a shooting on Genesee Street in Rochester Thursday night.

Police say they responded to a report that a person was shot at around 7 p.m. and found a man in his early 20s who had been shot multiple times. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Capt. Frank Umbrino says it's the twenty-ninth homicide in Rochester of 2021.

Police say the victim was standing at the corner of Genesee Street and Sawyer Street when multiple people armed with handguns walked up to him and shot him several times.

Investigators spoke to people in the area Thursday night, but said they need witnesses to call them.

"I can tell you there was at least a dozen people right here that saw it," Umbrino said. "Each murder is one phone call away from being solved. We can do what we can do. We need people to call up and cooperate."

This shooting was just down the street from a homicide that happened last weekend

Umbrino said the Major Crimes Unit will be investigating if the crimes are related.
