ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Some local students are making late basketball star Kobe Bryant their Black History Month focus.
Students at Big Family Sports Day at Virgil Grissom School No. 7 dedicated the day to the lives of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna.
They were among nine people who died in a helicopter crash just outside of Los Angeles in January. Chaperones say some of the students took the news hard at the time.
"We wanted to combine the things that he loved, which is love and basketball, " says parent liaison Ashantee Cowlay. "So, we invited the families out to come play basketball, eat some food, listen to music and have a good time together."
Students came in early Sunday morning to set up for the celebration. Organizers say they were most excited about putting the Bryants' initials up on the wall.
