Man indicted on rape charge in attack of U of R student

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The man accused of attempted sexual assault and robbery of a University of Rochester student last month was indicted on a first-degree rape charge Tuesday, prosecutors say.

31-year-old Courtney Barber was also previously arraigned on stalking, and criminal mischief charges. Police say back on Sep.20 Barber attempted to sexually assault the student in the Genesee Valley Park path area south of the Staybridge Hotel

Barber was eventually caught after running off, and had no affiliation to the university.

U of R students previously told us unwanted encounters are common on the trail.

U of R says if you’re on-campus and you feel unsafe, you can call their Department of Public Safety at (585) 275-3333. If you’re off-campus, call 911. And if you have to walk alone at night, U of R says try to do it in pairs.
