ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Mayor Lovely Warren is hoping to name an interim police chief by Sept. 29., the day current Rochester Police Chief La’Ron Singletary is set to retire.
Warren announced her plans during a briefing with Rochester City Council on Thursday.
While council members wanted to know what the transition plan would look like, Singletary said he has “not had any conversation with mayor about that.”
“My suggestion at this time is that we do an interim until after June of 2021,” Warren said. “I would hate to do a national search to pay for a lot of money to do a national search for someone that would come in and I don't think we would get a person that would come at this point in time.”
The Zoom meeting became heated when RPD deputy chiefs were questioned on why police shot pepper balls and tear gas into protesters last weekend.
According to the deputy chiefs, it was because some protesters shot firecrackers and threw frozen water bottles at them.
