ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Mayor Lovely Warren's challenger in the upcoming Democratic primary was near the scene of Friday's deadly shooting on Weld Street just hours before it happened.
Rochester City Councilmember Malik Evans was touring the Scio Street neighborhood when it happened.
If elected, Evans said he will use millions of the city's investment dollars to redevelop the neighborhood—something he says Mayor Warren has expressed little interest in.
"One of the pillars of our campaign is neighborhoods," Evans said. "So it's important that we make sure to actually have conversations with neighbors. Often, we do things without having conversations with them first, and that is the purpose here. There is a lot of investment possibilities coming to Rochester and we want to make sure that the neighbors have their voices heard."
Earlier Friday, Mayor Warren declared June 4 "Gun Violence Awareness Day."
Early voting will be held from June 12 through June 20 at 14 different locations in Monroe County.
Primary Day is on Tuesday, June 22.
