ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — April is National Donate Life Month, a time to encourage people to become organ donors.
To kick it off, Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo raised a flag outside the County Office Building.
DMVs throughout the county are sharing information about joining the registry and urging customers to make an informed decision about organ donation.
Romeo was joined at Tuesday's event by members of the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network, families of organ donors, as well as organ recipients.
They explained why the decision to donate is so important.
"If you don't believe that I don't think that life is worth living [...] [I] thank my donors, who I know personally, and all the things that they have said about the reasons why you should register for donation is true," organ recipient Larry Billings said. "Families go through a lot of struggling if it has not already been made ahead for those of you out there trying to make the decision. I don't want my family to have to make the decision when my time comes."
People interested in becoming organ donors can sign up at all four Monroe County DMVs.
However in-person appointments are limited during the pandemic, so officials want you to know that you can also sign up online.
Anyone 16 and older can register.
