ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Rep. Joe Morelle (D, 25) introduced legislation Thursday that would guarantee consumers and small businesses the right to repair their own electronics.

The bill, called the Fair Repair Act, would require manufacturers to make diagnostic repair information, parts, and tools readily available.

Right now, many electronics manufacturers require that repairs or parts be made by the original equipment manufacturer or authorized vendors.

Morelle’s office says that process is costly and burdensome for consumers.

News10NBC’s Brett Davidsen has covered similar legislation at the state level, called the Digital Fair Repair Act.

Davidsen interviewed Morelle about the bill. Watch the full interview in the video in the player above.
