Never Forget: 9/11 remembrance events in Rochester area

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — This year marks 20 years since the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks against the United States, a date that changed history and a day that many Americans will never forget.

Twenty years later, the memories of that day are still fresh in the minds of many.

In honor and remembrance of the nearly 3,000 lives lost there are several ceremonies and memorials that will take place around the Rochester area.

Here’s a full list of events this weekend:

Brighton (Monroe Community College)

MCC is holding a September 11 Remembrance Ceremony at the September 11th Remembrance Walk, outside The Pamela Ann Chesonis (PAC) Center on its Brigton campus from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 featuring keynote remarks by MCC alumnus and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Andrew J. “A.J.” Tascione ’02 and Fishers Fire District Chief Daniel Chapman. They will recount where they were during the attacks.

Brockport

Brockport Volunteer Firefighter’s Association will host a 9/11 vigil Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at 237 South Main Street.

Chili

The Chili Fire Department, Town of Chili will host a 9/11 remembrance ceremony Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Chili Fire Department located at 3231 Chili Avenue.

Churchville

A 9/11 memorial ceremony will be held on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at the Churchville Firehouse at 24 Washington Street.

Henrietta (Rochester Institute of Technology)

The Army and Air Force ROTC programs will commemorate 9/11 from 8:20 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, in front of the Sentinel and Student Alumni Union. RIT’s Veterans Upward Bound Program Assistant Director David Oliver will speak about military service and insights about veterans returning from deployments. Taps will be played in front of a flag array at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., and 10:03 a.m. as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the four attacks which took place in New York City, Washington, D.C. and in Pennsylvania.

MCC Students plan a ceremony to remember victims of the 9/11 attacks on Saturday. The event will start at 8 a.m. at the MCC’s Brighton Campus at 1000 E. Henrietta Road.

Honeoye Falls

Hometown Hero Banners-Honeoye Falls-Lima-Mendon will host the 20th Anniversary 9/11 remembrance ceremony from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at 167 North Main Street.

Irondequoit

The Irondequoit Police Department will be conducting the 20th Annual September 11th Remembrance Ceremony on Saturday at 8:46 a.m. on the town hall grounds at the Irondequoit Town Hall, 1280 Titus Avenue.

Point Pleasant Fireman’s Association is hosting "20th Anniversary Memorial of 9/11" on Saturday at 55 Ewer Avenue. The ceremony will start at 8:35 a.m. and go until 10:50 a.m.

    Macedon

    Rochester Corvette Club in association with Van Bortel Chevrolet/Corvette presents "Lest We Forget" event on Saturday. The event begins as early as 10 a.m. with a formal ceremony at noon located at 1338 Pittsford-Palmyra Road.

    Mendon

    The 2nd Annual Rochester National Fallen Firefighters Foundation 9-11 Memorial Bike Ride is planned for Saturday starting at 8:46 a.m.at the Mendon Fire Department on Mendon Ionia Road. Check-in/registration will start at 7:30 a.m. The bike ride will conclude back at the fire station around 10 a.m. where each participant will take part in the ringing of the memorial bell and announce the name of the FDNY fallen firefighter that they are riding for. At noon the Mendon Fire Department parade will begin.

    Penfield

    The Town of Penfield invites the public to a 9/11 remembrance ceremony on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the 9/11 Memorial Garden adjacent to the Dolomite Lodge at 1628 Jackson Road.

    Rochester

    Veterans Outreach Center is hosting Operation We Remember, a remembrance ceremony to honor those impacted. It’ll be hosted at the Blue Cross Arena on Sept.10 from 10:30 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.

    Operation Patriot "Let’s Roll!" 20th Anniversary 9/11 Tribute Ride & Concert is set for Saturday at Ontario Beach Park.

    Event Schedule:

    • 9 a.m. – Ride registration
    • 11 a.m. – Ride leaves Ontario Beach Park
    • 11:40 a.m. – Ride arrives in Brockport
    • 1:15 p.m. – Ride returns to beach
    • 1:45 p.m. – Memorial Ceremony
    • 2:30 p.m. – Takin’ it to the Streets – Doobie Brothers Tribute Show
    • 4 p.m. – Tribute close

    9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held Sunday at 8:46 a.m. at Frontier Field

    Spencerport

    9/11 Community Remembrance Ceremony will be held on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Spencerport Fire Station at 175 Lyell Avenue.

    Webster

    EMS Base Dedication and Webster Village 9/11 Memorial at 5:30 p.m. at 1030 Jackson Road.

    LIVINGSTON COUNTY:

    Avon

    The St. Agnes School is hosting a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Friday, Sept. 10 at Circle Park in Avon. All veterans, first responders and community members are invited.

    Geneseo

    SUNY Geneseo will host a 9/11 remembrance flag presentation on Saturday at 8 a.m. at SUNY Geneseo, 1 College Circle.

    Lima

    The Lima American Legion Post 282 will host a remembrance ceremony, along with a spaghetti dinner and a memorial ride. The remembrance ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Registration for the memorial ride is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the departure at 11:30 a.m. The event will be located at Lima American Legion at 2475 NY-65 in Bloomfield.

    Livonia

    Livonia Fire Department will hold a ceremony starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at Livonia Fire Dept. 4213 South Livonia Road.

    Mount Morris

    Mount Morris Partners for Progress will be holding a dedication ceremony on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Responders Mural on Main Street and Federal Street in Mount Morris. A mural honoring first responders was recently completed in the village of Mount Morris. The mural, painted by well-known artist Shawn Dunwoody, was commissioned by Mount Morris Partners for Progress. The dedication will include participation from the following organizations:

    • Mt. Morris Fire Department
    • Mt. Morris Police Department
    • Mt. Morris Ambulance Service
    • Mt. Morris VFW Post
    • Mt. Morris American Legion Post
    • Livingston County Sheriff’s

    Free hot dogs will be available to everyone attending the dedication.

    ONTARIO COUNTY:

    Canandaigua

    The Canandaigua City School District is hosting its first annual 9/11 community fundraiser to benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation on Saturday. The event will start at noon and go until 3 p.m. at the Canandaigua City School District High School athletic field at 435 East Street. Local fire, EMS, and police agencies will be in attendance. There will also be music, an ice cream truck, and food concessions for all to enjoy.

    WAYNE COUNTY:

    Clyde

    A 9/11 Tribute to Wayne County Sheriff Deputy William "Bill" Carr and K-9 Deputy Quigley will be held on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Heritage Park located on Glasgow Street in Clyde. There will be music, speakers, and lastly the dedication of a plaque that will remain in Heritage Park for the years to come.

    OTHER AREAS:

    World Trade Center 9/11 South Pool, NY

    The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) will hold a wreath laying ceremony at the site of the attack on the World Trade Center on Friday, Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m. It will be livestreamed on Facebook.

    St. Bonaventure University

    The university in the town of Allegany in Cattaraugus County will hold a public memorial service at 12:20 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, at the 9/11 Memorial near the Swan Business Center. During the ceremony, members of the university’s men’s rugby team will distribute flowers in memory of the three alumni who died during the attacks on Sept. 11: Fr. Mychal F. Judge, O.F.M., ’57, Rob Peraza, ’94, ’96, and Amy O’Doherty, ’00.
