NTSB releases initial report on deadly Genesee County helicopter crash

ELBA, N.Y. (WHEC) — The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Tuesday released its initial report on the Genesee County helicopter crash that killed two men last month.

It happened on April 26 during a training flight at around 1 p.m. Retired Rochester Police Officer, New York State Police pilot and National Guard pilot and current Mercy Flight pilot James Sauer, 60, of Churchville and Stewart M. Dietrick, 60 of Prosper, Texas, a Bell Helicopter flight instructor, were killed.

According to the report, one of the engine switches was found in the "Off" position.

Both were highly experienced pilots, according to the NTSB.

The NTSB’s full investigation could take as long as 12 months, NTSB officials said last month.
