Pain at the pump for Memorial Day weekend travelers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — This holiday weekend is turning into a time of pared-back plans and pain at the pump as drivers try to hit the road and hit those gas stations.

Those sky-high gas prices are making a big difference for travelers. Some say they aren’t making any plans because the price at the pump is too high.

"I don’t really pay attention to the gas prices pulling in but then when I start pumping gas I’m like oh my gosh gas is really that expensive," Tierra Parris told News10NBCs Stephanie Duprey.

Parris wasn’t the only one to say, work or traveling the city, is what’s on the agenda for Memorial Day weekend because of the pinch at the pump.

"I’ll go to work, that’s it, if I do any cookouts it will be where I live. I’m not going to any parks I’m not driving anywhere," Felix Ocasio said.

"It’s almost three dollars higher per gallon, it’s just crazy!" Parris said.

Ocasio says he can’t remember the last time he saw his car at a full tank.

"I never even go halfway, just less than that, but even when I do three-quarters in there it’s like twenty bucks, I mean that’s still a lot, imagine what it would be if I filled it up."

According to AAA, 39.2 million people are expected to travel this weekend. That’s an increase of 8.3% over last year and is almost in line with the number of travelers in 2017. With high gas prices and the high price of food at the grocery store, Ocasio says everything is too expensive to really be out and about right now.

"I try to save as much gas as I can, everything is so expensive, even food prices have gone up, you just have to do whatever you can to save."

And for some, that means laying low on big holiday weekends

"I have to go to work, it is what it is, inflation is high everything, gas rent," Parris added.
