This year, the Pancreatic Cancer Association of Western New York's 11th annual 'Step It Up! Cure Pancreatic Cancer 5K & Family Fun Day' is going virtual.
November is pancreatic cancer awareness month. The fundraiser event, which typically happens indoors on one day, is now spread out over three weeks. It starts on November 1 and runs through November 21, which is National Pancreatic Cancer Day.
Because weather can be unpredictable in our area this time of year, participants can chose when and where they want to complete the 5K within the three-week window. Executive Director Mary Ellen Smith says it's not about where or when you walk, it's about who you walk for that matters.
In addition to the 5K, PCAWNY is offering activities for families like a scavenger hunt and prize competitions. They're also raising awareness with a rock hiding/seeking challenge, in which purple painted rocks will be hidden in parks and communities. Once a participant finds a rock, they're encouraged to re-hide it in a new location for another participant to find.
Over the three weeks, event organizers are challenging participants to take one step for every person diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year -- 57,600 total. To register for the event and learn more about PCAWNY, visit their website by clicking here.
