PENFIELD, N.Y. (WHEC) — A social media post caused a scare for Penfield High School families, but the school district says there was never a real threat.

A post in the PCSD Class of 2025 claims that a student sent a picture of what looked to some like a real gun was sent to other students on Snapchat claiming that the student who sent it was going to use it in school.

The Penfield Central School District sent a notice to parents Tuesday night clarifying that the photo that was sent was of an airsoft gun and that it was sent by one student to another this past summer and resurfaced.

Superintendent Thomas K. Putnam said interviews with the student and the student’s parents were conducted and a consensual search of the family’s home found there were no weapons in the home.

Putnam said the Monroe County FIT Team, Monroe Crime Analysis Center and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office determined there was no credible threat and that the student who shared the original post has been disciplined.
