Police: 2 arrested for attempting to convince Gates ATM customers to cash fake check

GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — Gates Police arrested two men for attempting to cheat people out of their money thanks to two citizens who reported something that didn’t look right.

Police say they called 911 when they noticed a van with no license plates, driving around an ATM on Chili Avenue near Hinchey Road.

Police set up a surveillance camera at the ATM.

When the van returned police say two men got out and tried to convince ATM customers to cash a $1,600 fake check.

Police arrested Akai Phillips and Paris Ivery, both 24, for criminal possession of a forged instrument.

Police say Phillips had an outstanding warrant in Irondequoit.
