ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Rochester Police Department has arrested two teenage boys, ages 16 and 14 for setting a man on fire.

The 16-year-old from Rochester, who has not been identified due to his age, was arrested Friday after an investigation found he had been the one who set a man in his 50s on fire on Lyell Avenue. Police say the suspect sprayed the victim with an ignitable liquid before setting him aflame on a chair in his apartment. The victim sustained second and third-degree burns over 70% of his body and is currently listed in critical condition at the URMC Burn Trauma Unit.

The 16-year-old is facing charges of first-degree assault and second-degree attempted arson. He was arraigned in Monroe County Youth Court before being remanded to the Monroe County Children's Center.

The 14-year-old, also from Rochester, appeared in Monroe County Family Court on Monday. He was also charged with first-degree assault and second degree attempted arson. Police say he was taken into custody on Friday on an unrelated outstanding Juvenile Delinquent Warrant and was taken to the Office of Children and Family Services, where has remained since.

Police are withholding the 14-year-old's name because he has no family in the Rochester area and they are trying to contact potential family members out of state.

The victim has not been identified at this time but police say that the victim and suspect are not related and it was not a domestic violence incident. The investigation is ongoing, though police are not seeking any additional suspects.

They are asking anyone with information to call 911, email them at MajorCrimes@CityOfRochester.gov or call Crime Stoppers at 423-9300.
