GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — Police say an innocent man is dead after an attempted carjacking on Buell Road in Gates Wednesday morning.
Police say it happened just before 11 a.m. They say the victim was a 71-year-old man and he was shot multiple times.
He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he died.
"I can tell you that this is a total—unbelievable—just a true brazen act of violence that occurred in broad daylight at 10:45 a.m., which is unacceptable and not something that we would routinely see here in the Town of Gates," Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode said.
News10NBC's Emily Putnam reported officers had the area blocked off in front of the Red Roof Inn near the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport for the investigation.
Putnam also reported seeing a black car with a shattered driver's side window, and several police agencies including the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Ogden Police, and Gates Police were on the scene.

VanBrederode says it's part of a spike in about 14 carjackings that have occurred in Greece, Webster, City of Rochester, Ogden, Irondequoit and now Gates, that law enforcement officials believe are all related. He says the perpetrators appear to be targeting random men and women.
"This appears to be just a totally random, who they're picking, and again, this victim today [Wednesday] was 71-years-old, just a random victim who got caught up in the middle of this carjacking, and again they took his life," VanBrederode said.
VanBrederode says the public should be aware of their tactics, which include rear-ending the victim and stealing the car when the victim gets out of the vehicle, pulling in front of the victim while they are stopped, and following victims home.
Webster police detailed the stolen vehicle incident that they believe is related to this pattern. While it did not involve a weapon, police say the victim was rear-ended and followed to a commercial building. The car was stolen when the victim was inspecting the damage. Both cars involved have since been recovered.
VanBrederode says to be aware of your surroundings and to surrender the car if you're targeted.
"We do want to get a message out on behalf of law enforcement that we are very concerned about the safety of our residents," VanBrederode said. "This is a very dangerous situation, again it first started seven or eight days ago and now the violence has continued to escalate to what we have today [Wednesday] where someone was shot and killed."
VanBrederode says one suspect is a light-skinned Black or Hispanic man. Police are looking for a black car with tinted windows and anyone with information is encouraged to call 911.
A task force was set up Wednesday. Its number is 585-429-8275.
