ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Presumptive mayor-elect Malik Evans spoke to News10NBC Sunday about the recent surge in violence in the city.

He said it's saddening and unacceptable that four more people have been shot, two of them fatally.

In order to prevent incidents like early Sunday morning's quadruple shooting from happening again, Evans said we need to be proactive.

"When we get... when we get intelligence on these large gatherings, we have to make sure that there are credible messengers there to make sure that ... hey, if you're gonna take it to the next step and pick up a gun we need to be able to disrupt those things proactively,” Evans said. “So we have to be very proactive in terms of trying to stop large gatherings where a lot of these incidents happened. Most of these shootings have happened at large gatherings."

The shooting comes exactly one year after a mass shooting on Pennsylvania Avenue that killed two and injured 14.

That shooting also happened during a large gathering: A house party.

Jaquayla Young and Jarvis Alexander, both 19, were killed.

The Rochester Police Department still hasn't charged anyone in the Pennsylvania Avenue shooting.
