ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Members of the community gathered for a grand opening celebration for a new support system serving the greater Rochester area.
Proud Moments ABA in Pittsford helps children with autism through direct intervention using applied behavior analysis (ABA). The goal is to help kids when they're young so that they can be more independent when they're older. Proud Moments also works with young adults through the transition phase of life.
News10NBC spoke with Dr. Daniel Mruzek, the regional clinical director, about one transition that will impact every student he sees.
"It's not uncommon for a person with autism to have difficulty with change or disruption in routine, and COVID precautions have certainly become part of our routine during the last year and a half," Mruzek said. "So, this return to a new normal is going to be a disruption as well. We're here to help children feel comfortable."
Mruzek says social skills and communication are the two areas they work on with children the most.
