RCSD to weigh continuation of police at arrival/dismissal, consolidation of some schools

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— The Rochester City School District’s Board of Education Tuesday night is expected to weigh several decisions, including continued police presence on school grounds, and the consolidation of some schools.

The BOE will initially hear from Superintendent Dr. Lesli Myers-Small as she presents her recommendations to the board, those of which include the consolidation. Specific schools were not listed on the board’s agenda.

Additionally, the board will review a motion to continue a partnership with the Rochester Police Department to keep officers posted up outside at least 11 schools during arrival and dismissal.

As we’ve been telling you about for months, several violent incidents have been reported at a number of RCSD buildings, prompting plans for safety changes, and calls for even more adjustments.

According to the district, the partnership includes paying out $78,210.00 from the district’s general fund budget. The officers would be paid on overtime, which will cover the two-hour-long shifts.

Rochester City Council members will also take up the measure during its meeting Tuesday night. RCSD’s meeting starts at 5:30 p.m., City Council will meet later at 7:30 p.m.
