Republicans declare victory in race for Irondequoit Town Supervisor, candidates holding off

IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WHEC) — A hotly-contested race for town supervisor in Irondequoit now appears to have a winner.

Republican Rory Fitzpatrick has overtaken Democrat Joe Morelle Jr. and Republicans have declared victory.

Morelle released a statement, congratulating Fitzpatrick — but said his campaign is still waiting on a final outcome.

His full statement is below:

“To everyone who voted and participated in our democracy, thank you for making your voices heard.

As we await the final outcome and the counting of absentee ballots, I want to congratulate Rory Fitzpatrick on a hard-fought campaign. We share the same fundamental goal: to support and strengthen the incredible community we call home. The future of Irondequoit remains bright, and I am hopeful for what lies ahead.”

Fitzpatrick told News10NBC, “I look forward to seeing the final results. Thanks to all who have supported me.” He also tweeted, saying "A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me and the campaign! A truly humbling experience. I will do my best to get back to everyone who is calling and texting. Much Love. I will wait for final results to make an official statement. ONE IRONDEQUOIT !!"

The town supervisors of Greece, Pittsford, Mendon, Webster, Clarkson and Chili all ran for re-election and won.

As of Wednesday, the race for town supervisor in Rush is still too close to call, with incumbent Gerry Kusse (D) and challenger Phyllis Wickerham (R) just 24 votes apart as of 4:19 p.m. Kusse had that small lead.
