RFD: Rochester man who climbed onto Engine Co. 1 and hurt firefighter in May 2020 protest charged

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Rochester Fire Department Arson Task Force charged a Rochester man in connection to the May 30, 2020 unrest in Downtown Rochester that happened after a Black Lives Matter Protest in the wake of the death of George Floyd.
The RFD says just after 7 p.m., the 20-year-old man climbed onto Engine Co. 1 when it was responding to several arsons at the Public Safety Building that happened that day, damaged the fire engine and injured a firefighter.
The RFD says Engine Co. 1 had to be removed from service for “an extended period of time” while the damage was repaired.
The man, whose name the RFD did not release, was charged with first degree riot, second degree assault and third degree criminal mischief.
The RFD says it expects an Order of Protection will be issued by the court.
